Join author Michael Rosen for a lively session on how poetry and stories can spark social change. Discover how rich, playful language opens minds, challenges stereotypes, and helps children see the world in bold, imaginative new ways. SOCIAL CHANGE PROGRAMME

Michael Rosen’s lifelong body of work is grounded in a passionate belief: that literature—especially children’s literature—has the power to spark profound social change. In this session, Rosen explores how stories and poetry serve not merely as vessels of entertainment or instruction, but as aesthetic experiences that provoke thought, nurture creativity, and challenge conventional ways of seeing the world. Rather than delivering direct messages, Rosen argues that the formal qualities of language—its rhythms, structures, and imaginative leaps—offer young readers divergent, surprising, and liberating visions. His commitment to sharing poetry with children reflects a deep conviction that access to rich and playful language is essential for developing critical thinking and a deeper understanding of self and society. Through readings, reflections, and discussion, Rosen invites participants to consider how literature can be a tool for resistance, empathy, and transformation.

In conversation with Nathan Waddell, Professor of English Literature at the University of Birmingham.

Michael would advise an audience of 16+ (from sixth formers upwards) as this session has a much more adult theme and younger teenagers will be disappointed with the content.
