Tom Crawford

Public Engagement Lead and Departmental Lecturer in Mathematics at the Oxford University Department for Continuing Education

Dr Tom Crawford—also known as Tom Rocks Maths—is a mathematician, science communicator, and unapologetic maths rebel. With a PhD in fluid dynamics from the University of Cambridge and a maths degree from Oxford, Tom now teaches at the University of Oxford and leads public engagement for its Department for Continuing Education.

He’s best known for turning maths into a spectacle—whether it’s explaining equations with tattoos, surfing sine waves, decoding criminal patterns or calculating how many Pikachus it takes to power a lightbulb, Tom uses pop culture—including Pokémon—to make numbers unforgettable. His award-winning outreach work includes viral YouTube videos, TEDx talks, and collaborations with BBC and Numberphile. With over 30 million views and a mission to make maths entertaining and accessible, Tom proves that numbers aren’t just useful—they’re thrilling.
