James Kinross

Consultant colorectal surgeon and Associate Professor of Surgery, Imperial College London; author of Dark Matter

James Kinross is a consultant colorectal surgeon at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and Associate Professor of Surgery at Imperial College London. His research explores how the gut microbiome shapes health and disease, from cancer to recovery after surgery, and how artificial intelligence and new technologies can make surgery safer and more precise. He has published widely and co-founded several health-technology companies.

James is the author of Dark Matter: The New Science of the Microbiome (Penguin Life, 2022), which introduced a general audience to the trillions of microbes that live within us. He argues that modern life has cut a sterile generation off from the microbes it needs, and shows how to bring them back.
