Emily Hauser

Scholar of classics and a historical fiction novelist

Emily Hauser is a British classicist, novelist, and public intellectual whose work bridges ancient history and contemporary storytelling. Born in Brighton and raised in Suffolk, she began studying Greek at age 11 and went on to earn degrees from Cambridge, Harvard, and Yale, completing a PhD focused on women in classical literature and modern women’s writing.

Hauser is best known for her Golden Apple trilogy—For the Most Beautiful, For the Winner, and For the Immortal—which reimagines Greek myths through the eyes of the women traditionally sidelined in epic narratives. Her fiction and academic work challenge patriarchal readings of antiquity, offering fresh, feminist perspectives on figures like Helen, Briseis, and Atalanta.

She is currently a senior lecturer in Classics and Ancient History at the University of Exeter, and her scholarship focuses on gender, authorship, and classical reception. Her latest book, MYTHICA: A New History of Homer’s World was an instant bestseller and continues her mission to recover the voices of women written out of history.

Hauser has appeared on BBC Radio 4, Times Radio, and ABC Australia, and her work has been featured in The Guardian alongside literary figures like Colm Tóibín and Natalie Haynes. Whether writing fiction, teaching, or speaking to global audiences, she brings ancient stories into the present with lyrical insight and a fierce commitment to justice.
