Baroness Shaista Gohir OBE is a leading British women’s rights advocate, charity chief executive, and Crossbench member of the House of Lords. Born to parents who had emigrated from Daultala in Pakistan during the early 1960s, she grew up within a community shaped by migration, resilience, and strong civic values. She now lives in Hall Green and is a mother of three, balancing family life with a national public profile.
Her career in social justice spans more than two decades, during which she has become one of the most influential voices on issues affecting Muslim and minority women in Britain. She first became involved with the Muslim Women’s Network in 2005, when it was still a government advisory group. Recognising the need for independence and a stronger campaigning voice, she helped transform it into an autonomous organisation in 2008, renaming it Muslim Women’s Network UK (MWNUK). As its Chief Executive Officer, she has led major national research projects, policy campaigns, and frontline support services, tackling issues such as gender‑based violence, forced marriage, honour‑based abuse, and structural inequalities. Her earlier work in the charity sector included roles with Oxfam GB and Save the Children UK, where she developed expertise in advocacy, community engagement, and organisational development.
In June 2022, she was appointed a life peer in the House of Lords, taking her seat as Baroness Gohir OBE. As a Crossbench peer, she brings an independent, evidence‑driven perspective to parliamentary debates, particularly on women’s rights, safeguarding, and equality. She divides her time between Birmingham and London, continuing to lead MWNUK while contributing to legislative scrutiny and national policy discussions.
Her contributions have been recognised with significant honours: she was awarded an MBE in 2008 for services to Muslim people and community relations, followed by an OBE in 2016 for her continued work on social justice and women’s rights. Alongside her parliamentary and charity leadership, she co‑founded the Nisa Global Foundation and has developed a reputation for strong governance, ethical fundraising, and the use of technology to improve charity operations and data‑driven decision‑making.
